Everyone experiences ups and downs in their fortunes. When luck is on your side, you receive help from benefactors; when misfortune strikes, you encounter petty people. These petty people commit many evils, and not only should you avoid them, but you must also find ways to subdue them and prevent them from causing trouble. The Thai people's method of warding off petty people is to wear an image of the deity Rahu. The Rahu image is entirely black, wearing a canopy, with leopard eyes and fangs, a tall stature, and biting the sun or moon in its mouth. Its fierce expression inspires awe.

However, the statue only shows the upper body, and there's a reason for that. Rahu was mischievous by nature and often caused trouble, which made the gods dislike him greatly. Legend has it that the sun god hated Rahu even more than the moon goddess, so he falsely accused Rahu of being an evil god to the god of gods, Tongue. Tongue was furious upon learning this and cut Rahu in half at the waist. Tongue eventually discovered the truth and found that Rahu was a righteous god, while the moon was the evil god. In the end, he was made a righteous god, and Rahu was exonerated and ennobled among the gods. Because Rahu deeply hates those who slander others behind their backs, he is also known as the Buddha Who Eats Small People.

Because Rahu's body was severed in half due to the moon goddess's slander, he harbors deep resentment towards evil, hence the Buddha statue depicting him biting the moon. Thais also consider solar and lunar eclipses to be Rahu's punishment of the sun and moon goddesses. During eclipses, Thais believe it is the best time to seek Rahu's protection and make wishes.

Master's Introduction

Phra Ajahn Kruba Kritsana Intawanno is a highly respected monk from northern Thailand , born on August 1, 1954 ( Buddhist Era 2497 ). He is the ninth of ten siblings. As a child , he studied Buddhism under the tutelage of the renowned northern Thai monk, Kruba Pu, and followed him on his ascetic journeys, which took them from east to north, even venturing into the mountains of Cambodia and Laos . Now 59 years old in 2013 , Phra Ajahn Kruba Kritsana is renowned for his profound spiritual power, particularly his butterfly amulets, which are famous for their efficacy, earning him the title " Butterfly King . "

Kruba Krissana officially became a monk at the age of 25. For the next 10 years, he secluded himself in the mountains to study Buddhism , Dharma , and meditation . In 1989 ( Buddhist Era 2532 ), Kruba Krissana traveled to a sparsely populated area in northern Thailand. Through observation and calculation, he discovered a cave with abundant spiritual energy. He then meditated in this cave for three years. During this time, the surrounding villagers learned that a Buddhist monk was practicing in the cave, and some villagers witnessed extraordinary lights emanating from him during his meditation. As a result, the villagers built a temple in the forest and invited Kruba Krissana to serve as the abbot and help the villagers. Thus, a temple named Wat Maha Van was built in 1993 (Buddhist Era 2536 ) . The amulets blessed by Master Kruba Krissana were made using soil from the well at that time. After the butterfly amulets he made were given to the local villagers, their lives and relationships improved. The villagers then asked the master to continue making more amulets to help more believers.
