Wat Phanan Choeng ( วัดพนัญเชิงวรวิหาร ) , also known as Wat Phanan Choeng or Wat Phanan Choeng , was built in 1324. It houses one of the largest seated Buddha statues in Thailand and is a Chinese temple predating the Ayutthaya Kingdom. The temple is constantly filled with worshippers, mostly local Chinese, and is most bustling during the Lunar New Year, when Chinese people from other provinces also come to pray and offer their blessings.
It is said that when Zheng He of the Ming Dynasty went on his voyages to the Western Ocean, he visited Ayutthaya, the capital of Siam at the time.
To commemorate Zheng He's visit, later generations built Sanbao Temple. Inside the temple is a 19- meter-tall seated Buddha statue in the U-Tong style, where a grand Buddhist ceremony is held every year in mid -October . Compared to other temples, Sanbao Temple is more imbued with Chinese cultural elements; behind the Buddha statue, there are many smaller Buddha statues donated by believers as part of their vows.
In 1901 , the Buddha statue was severely damaged in a fire, and the following year King Chulalongkorn personally oversaw the temple's restoration. Surrounding the main temple are several Chinese-style temples, such as the Temple of the God of Wealth and the Temple of Guanyin, where devotees pray for wealth and children, and these temples are very popular.
[Introduction to the Queen Buddha]
Nang Phaya Queen Buddha, actually known as Pissanurok in Thailand, is one of the five ancient Buddhas ( Phisabh Pachi ) . It originated from the ancient kingdom of Phitsanulok. After the death of the king of Phitsanulok, the queen ruled the country and became the queen of Phitsanulok. The queen was a very capable leader who guided the people through many crises.
During the reign of Queen Phitsanulok, the kingdom was invaded by the Yuan Dynasty and other foreign powers. The Queen personally led the army into battle, greatly boosting the morale of the soldiers. They fought with unwavering courage and skill, as if divinely aided. Among the soldiers was a white-robed monk who created amulets of Nang Phaya (Queen Buddha) during the war, giving them to the soldiers as talismans for protection and to ensure their safe return. The remaining amulets were offered to the Queen and enshrined in the Nang Phaya Temple.
In 2470 , the pagoda of Wat Nang Phaya collapsed. At that time, the abbot asked the local people and monks to move the collapsed pagoda to the side of the temple to fill the hole. During the moving, a batch of powdered amulets belonging to Queen Phitsanulok was discovered. However, collecting amulets was not popular at that time, so only a few people took some of the amulets back to make offerings, and the rest were moved to fill the hole.
During World War II, people lived in constant fear and misery. Most people dug holes in temples or homes to hide from bombs. Wat Nang Phaya, however, chose to use the very hole they had previously filled as a shelter. The people who fled to Wat Nang Phaya, trembling with fear, noticed a Buddha amulet nearby. Out of terror, they instinctively grabbed the Nang Phaya (Queen Buddha) amulet for protection. Miraculously, when a bomb fell near them, it did not explode. Thus, they successfully avoided the bomb and remained safe.
After the news spread, it caused a sensation, and the Nang Phaya Queen Buddha began to receive offerings from a large number of believers!
