The Ghost King is a deity who has the power to manage ghosts. If you pay attention, you'll see two Ghost King statues outside many Thai temples. The purpose is to manage wandering ghosts and prevent spirits from disturbing the temple, much like the door gods in China. This is especially suitable for people who frequently visit places with heavy yin energy or who are prone to attracting spirits.
Ghost King Introduction
Inside Thai airports and outside temples, there is a figure with a blue-and-white face, prominent teeth, wielding a magic sword, and a gigantic size. This is the Ghost King, known in Thailand as Thao Vetsuwan (桃威素王 - Thai transliteration). Often carved on the two side gates of Buddhist temples, he is the guardian deity of these sacred Buddhist sites, preventing all demons, ghosts, and wandering spirits from approaching the sacred grounds and disturbing the peace of the temple.
Historical records indicate that numerous legends about the Ghost Kings have circulated in Thai folklore since ancient times. According to ancient texts, there are four Ghost Kings, each with their own domain, such as the spirits of the wild in the mountains, the unjustly deceased, all kinds of monstrous beasts, venomous snakes, and so on. However, the one who truly governs the ghosts and demons of the mortal realm is King Thao Vetsuwan. The four Ghost Kings are: Thao Vetsuwan, Thao Thakroot, Thak Koowen, and Thao Viroopark.
In Thailand's vast and sparsely populated land, some districts and villages are located in remote areas, where ghost stories are frequently heard. Therefore, people often worship the Ghost King, placing his image in the main hall or in front of the gate to ward off evil spirits and wandering ghosts. Ultimately, the Ghost King becomes the people's guardian deity. His power not only prevents wandering ghosts from approaching homes but also ensures the safety of families who worship him, and can even improve feng shui, bringing good fortune and wealth.
