📌The Awakening of Insects is one of the 24 solar terms in China.
"Zhe" refers to snakes, insects, rodents, and ants that hibernate underground during the winter.
This year, March 5th on the Gregorian calendar is the Jingxie (Awakening of Insects) day. Families traditionally perform rituals to appease the White Tiger and slay villains, hoping to release pent-up frustrations and drive away malicious people from their lives.
Besides the increase in snakes, insects, and rodents, people also believe that the "White Tiger" will appear on the day of Jingzhe (Awakening of Insects). The White Tiger is regarded as a harbinger of disaster, bringing bloodshed, illness, accidents, and villains. Therefore, the ancients believed that Jingzhe was the day the White Tiger would wreak havoc, hence the saying that people would offer sacrifices to the White Tiger on the day of Jingzhe.
Among the five mythical beasts, the "White Tiger" is said to be the incarnation of a 500-year-old tiger, belonging to an inauspicious star. Folk tradition holds that this inauspicious star begins to open its mouth during the Jingzhi (Awakening of Insects) period, bringing various calamities to people and livestock. In folk rituals, a piece of raw pork dipped in pig's blood is placed in the mouth of a paper White Tiger (feeding the paper tiger). Once the tiger is satiated, it will no longer harm people. The master will smear fatty raw pork on the paper tiger's mouth, filling it with oil so it can no longer open its mouth to hurt people. In some places, after the White Tiger is worshipped, the paper White Tiger is burned or its head is cut off with a copper sword.
According to folklore, the White Tiger is the god of gossip and disputes. Offending it will lead to trouble caused by petty people, hindering your future and causing all sorts of misfortunes. Therefore, many people will offer sacrifices to the White Tiger on the day of the Awakening of Insects, feeding it with fatty pork to prevent it from opening its mouth and harming people, in order to find peace of mind.
